No need. If the GFCI tripped, and suspect it did, the reset (red) button will be out. Push it in and that should restore power

Just because the gfi looks ok, doesnt mean it couldnt be tripped. Sometimes they wont pop out all the way, but still do their job.
i'd pop the fault button, then reset and check that box for power.

We must have been typing at the same time. I'm puzzled at this point, unless a wire arced to the point where it is not making good contact. Or you missed a GFCI? Wish I was in a situation where I could go to you house to help. I hate puzzles like this, gotta solve them.

It's either wired with the hot to the light first, or the hot to the switch first. Big difference. If there is two reds in the light and only one light in the room, it sounds like the hots are to the light first and its on a 3-way. If that's the case, He may never figure that out without some good help.

Only reading your first post, no one ever follows up so why should we.
If you are replacing fixtures or fans, try turning off the power, cutting the wires leading into the fixture/fan near the junction point and install new. Leaving the leads of existing fixtures/fans help you tie the new ones into the correct wires.
Obviously remove the short leads when making the final connections.

Probably should be wired like this
although he says it was originallywired with the 2 black to one side of the light and the 2 whites to the other. I'm wondering if it just looked that way because the old light had a white and black lead on the light? I'm perplexed, I've wired and rewired dozens of these circuits and not had this problem. I'm a little concerned a wire had either come loose or scorched enough to loose contact where it is connected elsewhere and has cut off power to the circuit.

Any chance you have a secondary panel where this breaker may be? Just grasping at straws.

it's something really simple, or like u said, a wire is loose some where.
Or, when he disconnected, he wasn't paying attention, and some thing needs to be hooked up.
or he has a gfi, some where(inside or outside) that is popped, but looks like it's good(had this happen to an outside outlet).
If he lived near me, i'd check it out, but he's no where near me.

I'm offshore or I would consider offering to help tomorrow. I think he probably had something like this and mistook what was there before so when he hooked the 2 whites together in the fixture he was connected a switched hot to his neutral. If the switches were in the right position, dead short. Should have tripped a breaker though, unless it scorched a wire or tripped a GFCI first. Color me baffled

Shoot y'all helped me understand what to look for...got a few electrical minded guys coming by later for crawfish hopefully we can figure it out...but mdomingue...do you think I should connect a black and white (like in that diagram)then wire it up? I thought about that but someone told me not to connect a hot and common.

best thing to do at this point, IMO, is to figure out why you have no power. Leave the wires to the light unconnected, preferably wire nutted or taped to avoid any accidents.
Once you have power, you can test each wire for power by checking with the switches in each position. Both up, Switch A up/Switch B down, Switch A down/Switch B up, Both Switches up. Check white, black, and red. I suspect what you'll find is that one of the blacks only has power when the red does and one only has power when the red does not. If you can get or have a voltmeter that reads AC, check voltage from any wire that has power to either white wire. I expect you will find one gives you a voltage reading and one does not.
If that does happen, you probably need to wire the black that has power when the red does to your light and the other black to the white that does not give you a voltage reading to the wire that shows power. The other white to your light. Hopefully, one of your friend will have a good handle on this.
