Dang that sounds like a surgery.....

Now where do you get training in a procedure that's not legal in 48 states?

Presumably they will receive comparable training in those procedures.
There's nothing in the bill requiring this training. Put that in the bill, and I'll listen.

Senate votes it down. Watch..

Now how's a trabeculoplasty work?
The laser is aimed through a gonio prism at the angle and a series of laser spots are shot into the trabecular mesh work for either 180 or 360 degrees depending on the surgeon's preference.

So they're going to go in cold and ruin people's sight left and right, and the answer to that is legislation spelling out what their training should be, just like everything in "real" medicine and surgery.

I don't know if they'll "go in cold" or not. They can if they want. My big issue with this is the oversight. Put this under the medical board, and I'm really not terribly opposed. I'd still rather it not pass, but I'm not going to get excited about it.
And the answer to an OD who goes in cold and ruins someone's eyesight should be a review by the medical board, just like an MD would be subjected to for the same procedure. The ODs want to eat their cake and have it to.

Something close to the opposite of what you posted. 24-10 for with some abstentions.

I think it's funny that the MDs are being attacked for their greed when the sole reason ODs have proposed this bill is to increase their revenue stream.
Posted on 5/13/14 at 12:12 am to medtiger
I don't see that happening because they would get sued into oblivion and wouldn't be able to get insurance, loans to buy their own equipment, or obtain privileges in facilities that have the equipment.

Got proof? MDs are fo sho greedy. Look at all the ones who push a pharma drug patients dont need. Far worse imo.

What do you care if someone wants to make more money? How un-American!

I think you have it all wrong D. These Optometrists just want to help more people in all the rural areas. Why are you so opposed to me getting my groceries, some underwear and an eye surgery at Walmart brah?
Posted on 5/13/14 at 12:18 am to Spock's Eyebrow
All of what you stated is a big reason I'm not too concerned with ODs trying to compete with MDs. I'm not sure how they're going to get malpractice insurance when they've only had a weekend course worth of training, and I don't see them spending $40,000 up front on a laser to do the procedures they are asking for.
In the long run, this could actually benefit both groups if they'd work together. I could hire an optometrist and personally train him/her to do some of these procedures, then have the OD doing those while I focus on the surgery I like to do. It would be a win-win.

Bill is suppose to be about access to care. I don't think ODs are going into this with the idea that they are going to get rich off doing a few YAGs and chalazion removals.
