Still use leaches and maggots in certain cases now

Couple that philosophy with the facts that the vast majority of medical students are science majors with little to no business background, and there is no additional training in med school and little if any in residency on business models and operation and you have a recipe for ignorant complacency.
Great post and I agree completely. It pisses me off that when you bring up the business side of medicine in med school or residency, it typically gets brushed aside as an aspect "that you shouldn't worry about right now." It doesn't seem to help that medicine has been forced to become so fragmented with each specialty basically having to lobby on its own (which does have it's positive sides as well) since the AMA basically only has members for the copy of Netter's.
Until med school and residency start incorporating more on the business side, it isn't going to get better. And unfortunately a lot of people end up thinking that means "greedy doctors trying to squeeze more money out of patients" but in reality a system that's more efficient allows you to provide better care because it cuts out more of the bullshite. Now how to get that done, if I knew I sure as hell wouldn't be doing medicine...

but here is the key,
doctors were trained on how to do that.
doctors were trained on how to do that.

So when an optometrist gets sued for malpractice after a botched eye or lid surgery, will they have to go in front of a medical review panel like other surgeons?
quote:
No. And that's great for them and sucks for ya'll.
How do you figure this is good for ODs? The medical review panel finds in favor of the physician a vast majority of the time and greatly limits damages in medical malpractice cases.

I assumed they'd have their own. Don't they currently have their own malpractice review board? Is this not covered in the bill?

They will then need to go see an opthalmologist to correct it.

My PAs provide excellent care if not better then most MD's I know at times.

That's fine and all but would you want those PAs cutting on you if a bill was passed and they had very little training, if any, in said procedure?

I don't see anything in the bill about an optometric review board, but I haven't read it in a few weeks.

Reaching a lil? Im starting to think this IS more of a turf issue.

What's so far fetched about that? I could easily envision a scenario where a bunch of PAs put together a strong lobby and petition the legislature to be able to do some minor procedures.

Won't happen. Medical Board already determine the scope of what PAs can and can't do. No way will they ever allow PAs to form their own board and determine their own scope of practice.

"Won't happen" seems to be everyone's famous last words when it comes to modern health care.
Once the ACA is fully embraced and becomes engrained, ALL bets are off. MDs, ODs, DOs, NPs, PAs, CRNAs will all be potentially screwed.

Are NP's or PA's allowed to practice independently in LA without oversight?

Lots of insecurities in this thread. Seemed like a very knee jerk post when I was mearly just stating a comment.
PAs\MDs are licensed throught lSBME. "Supervision" required. NPs have independent board of nursing

WTF are you even talking about? YOU brought up PAs and NPs. I just simply gave you an example as to why it's not the same situation. PAs and NPs don't perform any surgeries to my knowledge. They can only assist. So your "argument" doesn't hold water.

And until yesterday, the LSBME oversaw all eye surgery. Then, there was a bill that was passed that gave the optometric board that authority to oversee some eye surgery. I would've said before yesterday that MDs would "never allow" ODs to have surgery governed under their own board.
The issue here is that the LSBME will not get involved in political matters. They did not testify at a single hearing or meeting about this bill even though they were asked to several times by the Louisiana Ophthalmology Association. On the other hand, the Optometry Board was at every one.
