Have they had any problem with this in the states that allow it? Seems like the proof might be in the pudding?

Haven't found any numbers arguing the care is equal, superior, or inferior. One ophthalmologist I spoke with cited a report that an optometrist in OK who managed glaucoma at the VA mismanaged several patients and had vastly inferior outcomes to the national averages, but I have not been able to come across a good report of it.

ETA: but I find it very hard to believe that if their numbers are comparable with Ophthalmologists that they aren't publishing the hell out of them. That's the pessimist in me, but I also really think it's the most logical.

You won't find any numbers because complications that arise from these procedures aren't reportable. If I have a complication from an in office procedure, I don't send in that info to some central agency. I deal with the complication until it's treated and no one knows about it except me, the patient, any other physicians I may refer the patient to, and whomever the patient decides to tell.

The only complications that are reported are complications that take place in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility which optometrists wouldn't use.

I think it passes. Why not?

I'd go for the Chiropractic Proctologist next.

I predict Senator Heitmeier & a bunch of optoms will be celebrating & the rest of La won't know what hit them.

24-15 it passses

This is typical La politics -not about what's right or wrong

How's a liberal democrat win over a Senate full of conservative republicans? I just don't believe this will pass in Louisiana

Lasers ARE invasive it's very naive & irresponsible to say they otherwise (ie. " common noninvasive procedures ) Its a surgical cut in the eye. There's a definition of ophthalmic surgery which this bill ignores for the optoms. When they begin to do surgery with a laser or any other device, they should be under the LSBME LIKE EVERY OTHER SURGEON Heitmeier is powerful and he's trading whatever he can to Republicans, even Jindal, to make sure he not embarrassed again by passing this by whatever means necessary; and under their own board so their scope of practice can expand unchecked & undertrained

How on earth is jindal for this? I don't think this would look good in a presidential race

He's not necessarily for it but he won't veto- he'll sign it. Heitmeier has been his ally on getting his stuff through (trading favors) & that's what it's all about. Not about the real issues or what's right or wrong or safe or what's best for people

Where's this all go 20 years from now? What's the vision/plan after laser surgery?

Who knows, but its not getting better. Hopefully I'll be out by then. Probably have automated gadgets making your glasses & contacts at Wal-mart. And OD's trying to pass legislation to cherry pick whatever they can to stay afloat.

No, I say please stop after trauma call. Open globes, lid lacerations, orbital fractures, orbital malignancies, endophthalmitis, ect. that's where there's a real access problem.
