this analysis is done by every graduate engineer 1-2 years after going to work.
I did not see where the comparison includes the operator receiving 4 years of pay while the engineer is in college. Nor do folks include 4 years of college expense.

I did this analysis in 1972, first time using calculus after graduation and found that. my lifetime earnings under the best circumstances would exceed the operator when I was aged 78.

it is two different careers and comparing compensation after hire is not uplifting

did this analysis

I did the same thing 7 years ago when I went to ptech school.. Our department head tried to get me to Get a process Engineer degree.. I was 35 at the time.

The thing about being an operator is I get paid overtime for every min outside of my shift that I work. The engineers at work are salary. They just took a pay cut because of the economy. They took 2 weeks of vacation from them and they expect them to be on call 24/7.Most work at least 10 hours extra a week.

Shift work isn't for everyone..But I like working nights.. none of the non essential people are there on nights. I like having days off during the week to fish and hunt. IF I work overtime it's usually as a supervisor. 90 bucks an hour sure makes going to work easy..

Trust me, nothing is better than making the same money on salary as someone who has to work 800hrs of OT.

The 60 hours of 'free OT' a year is very much worth it.

With what, 1200 hours of OT?

working 60 hrs a week in 12 hr shifts comes out to about $156K.

so he is correct. 20 hrs OT per week X 52 weeks is 1040 hrs OT per year.

I don't know what plant you work at or if you are speculating but they started out unit manager out at 130k. I can make that working 200 hrs of ot and still have more days off than him.. The thing is though He's stuck at 130k if I want to make 150 or 180 all I have to do is work overtime. He can't do that.

You are admitting to being underpaid 75% of the time you are there.

That other 25% of the time you are paid more, but you are giving up your own time. To some people their own time is worhtless though.

And your math puts you making $52/hour. Definitely a outlier for ops pay.

I don't see your argument??? I'm admitting the only thing keeping me from making more money is going to work on off days.. the salary crew is considered paid 365 .. They can work as may days as me but their pay doesn't change.. I'll take working 6 months out of the year vs 5 or 6 days a week.

As far as pay you're about 2 dollars off.. but we get paid for 12 holidays. If we work a holiday It's double time and a half.. there's firebrigade . I get an extra 2000k a year to go in 1 hour early 4 times a year.. there's more but im not gonna waste my time ...

So, you really work about 500, or 25%, more hours to make the same pay.

Not to mention your '6 months off' includes 90 days or more where you work 4-5 hours, but you don't count them because it is the morning of your 'day off.'

Unless you are straight day, which gets even more rare for ops.

So with your logic the day is ruined if I work from midnight to 4 am.. on a off day but working 8 hours out of a day doesn't ruin it? I'll tak my 36 hours 1 week and 48 the next . Which is only 4 hours more a check than your 9 80.. In my opinion if I go to work for 1 hour or 12 hours that day is ruined.. Id be willing to bet I get out of bed off of nights earlier than most day walkers get up..

I work shift work, if fricking sucks. There is no way around it. When I get opportunities for 8 hour days it is awesome.

I justify with saying I get more days off and all the same bullshite you are saying.

Fact is I am off today. I worked until 5am and will be going back tomorrow at 5am. So yep, I have 24hrs off, I need to sleep twice in those 24hrs.

It's a shite schedule, it takes years off your life, don't try to sugar coat it.

My uncle worked shifts for 30 years. 10 years after he retired he still couldn't get his body on to a regular sleep schedule.

I've been a process engineer for a long time. You couldn't pay me enough to be an operator. I have a lot of respect for the good ones, it's a tough job.
