But, they certainly avoided the impact all of the additional water and fuel tanks they stacked on deck for that particular trip.
I asked Vance about yhat and he said while it damn dure didn’t help, in those conditions it wasn’t the difference maker.
When it’s your time, that’s it.
And where they were when the storm peaked was a no - win scenario

It's not very good, despite having a great cast.
I don't think I ever watched it but seem to remember the final scene where the boat is pretty much driving straight up a vertical wave face, which is just stupid.

Well, that and not making effort to avoid a massive storm. Couldn’t they have bailed up to Canada and waited it out?

I can’t remember everything Vance said about that, but essentially he figured they had to get the fish to market (IF) the icemaker was out. (Not an uncommon occurence on some boats he said). Boat wasn’t nearly fast enough to make it there anyway with them already on the ride home. Storm built too fast with an unprecedented three major systems colliding as they did.
Those guys are a different breed.
I’m not a little guy per say but I remember when Vance moved in next door and we met, I shook his hand. Was like shaking a catchers mitt made of iron. And he had been retired from it for over 12 yrs due to an back injury he received slipping on ice and falling onto the deck from height during another storm.
Those deep sea commercial fisherman up there were cut from a different cloth.
