You definitely aren't an idiot. The only thing I would say is this is being done by Saudis and Russia for their own benefit, not our oil & gas industry.

Not sure how many people are actually aware that both the Saudis and Russians have an oil & gas industry that can be decimated just as easily as ours by an oil glut and extremely low prices. These low prices rip through their economies also in many ways that are even more disruptive to them. This "production war" was never going to last very long.
