>>>>this may be a stupid question, but what's the purpose of the black box anyway??

we have high speed internet access, can't all the telemetry, etc. from an airplane be stored in a cloud? the idea of a black box on the airplane containing all the relevant data seems..well...'quaint'.

it doesnt make sense to me this black box is the best way to keep all this data when you got a $30 million dollar airplane, how much could it cost to store the data remotely instead of buried in a box?<<<<<

There was some woman on Fox who is a former NTSB official that said the same thing.

I hope the people are alive and there is some great mystery instead of a simple plane crash in the ocean we haven't been able to find.

That is a bad thing? Well, frick me I guess

Well, if you want the plane to be in a hangar somewhere, what does that imply about the fate of the passengers? What does that imply about the future use of the plane?

If you wish the plane is sitting in a secret hangar somewhere, I can only assume you hope for something truly horrible to have happened to the passengers and you hope the plane takes off again...which would mean only one thing.

I thought about that the other day. It's like someone still trying to tape shows on a VCR.

Are you drunk?

ETA:

If the plane crashed, 0% chance someone survived. If the plane didn't crash, >0% chance someone survived. I didn't say I want the plane to be a weapon or the people to get hurt. I just want it to be a cool mystery plane heist or something. Obviously, since the beginning, the chance this was anything other than a crash were slim.

You are seriously off your rocker this morning, even more than usual.

Passengers are hostages that are soon to be rescued by Navy Seals. Plane is recovered and the CIA goes medieval on the terrorist MFers.

I am skeptical that this 79 foot piece of debris that was filmed nearly four days ago would still be floating if it part of the plane.

That's adorable. I bet the engines on a 777 cost $30 million.

Unit cost on the 777-200ER (which MH370 was) - the "budget" 777 - is $261.5 million.

You mean just like ACARS which in this case for whatever reason quit transmitting data early in the flight.

"The introduction of the interface in the early 1990s between the flight data acquisition and management system, the aircraft condition monitoring system and the ACARS management unit resulted in wider acceptance of datalinks on the part of airlines. The flight data acquisition and management system and the aircraft condition monitoring system systems which analyze engine aircraft and operational performance conditions now provide performance data to the airlines on the ground in real time using the ACARS network."

But if it were still floating 8 days after the crash, why would it sink between then and now?

Well if the fuselage is in pieces I don't think it would float.

What would change in four days?... aluminum floats on a Monday just like it does on a Thursday.

So an aluminum can with a hole on both ends is going to float in a rough sea.

Not to mention that the can is full of things that don't float.

Time will tell if this image was the plane.

so i'm guessing cloud storage for black box data would cost what .00000000000001% of that?
