more than that it's either having the connections prior to law school, or doing networking in undergrad and law school so that you have something lined out well in advance

Any idiot can read some outlines a week before an exam and pass the class.
I am as self deprecating and critical of the profession as the next guy, but that's simply not true.

I relied on the kindness of others and did just fine.

Good god, why so many applicants with so many failures... Did Mike Foster pass his Bar at night school?

Eh, to some extent, but this is overplayed. Having connections may get you a job at smaller firms, but the big firms are hiring based on merits.

I didn't mean sabotaging other people, I just meant finishing in the top 20 or 10% depending on what job you are targeting.

always good to have in your pocket, but connections will trump it every time

I'm pretty sure Big Mike never passed... in fact, I don't think he ever even bothered to take the exam.

It really doesn't. It helps, but if you have connections at a big firm but are bottom half of the class, you're not getting a job.

Where's that poster who claimed he was a 2L at Loyola and had an inside track at a big firm partnership when he graduated because he "knew a guy?"

It's easier to cure Ebola than get a job as a lawyer nowadays.

In my law school experience plenty of people used outlines the days before an exam and aced it, myself included.

if your name, or your friend/relative's name is among those in the paragraph that is the letterhead you will, but I'm like you(seem to be) I wanted to make it on my own merit, I did, and although I love to help other people coming up, one of the things I'm most proud of is that I got to where I am without any assistance from anyone(with the exception of the LANG)

Again, maybe the smaller firms, but all of the big players in La have no nepotism policies, so if you have the same last name, even if you are number 1 in your class, you aren't getting a job at that firm.

Actually I know one guy who I actually believe this for. He did not finish in the top half of the class, but that didn't much bother him.

if I hadn't seent it so many times I wouldn't bother, but a "PI(political insert,)" wins out every time

There are some extremely incompetent people in law school. There are also others that are competent, but don't care to put forth very much effort.

Not really true. Not at at least one of the big ones.

Ok. I know a few people in law school right now with parents at larger law firms and they won't even get a look from their parent's firm.
That doesn't mean that their parents can't call up a friend at another big firm and get their kid a foot in the door, but even that connection is only going to help them get in over marginally better students. A connection is not getting a 75% student a job at your Kean miller, Taylor porter, phelps etc.
