The caste system always amazed me the whole you can't marry up thing. Then I realized how ingenious it was.

Since you'd marry your sons to the better daughters of other families at your own level and the lesser daughters could be used to stem rebellion and shore up support from a lower caste. As sending a son down might foster rebellion in itself. Basically it was the European horsetrading on marrying princes and princesses on crack.
