They don't want to gove you time to consult with the subject of the check or to concoct some elaborate story.
Ah gotcha, that makes sense.

I got home from work today and found a notice stuck on my front door from the Dept of Defense Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency. The note stated is necessary that I call them back about the fitness and suitability of person they are considering for a "position of National Security or Public Trust with the US Governemnt." Today's date as well as the name and phone number of an agent to contact was given. There was also information on how to verify the agent's identity.
Never heard of something like this. Really strange.
Is this legitimate or a scam? If this is legitimate, should I even contact them?
Somebody has listed you as a reference on a security clearance application most likely. The person doing so should have given you a heads up. I always let anyone I list when renewing that they should expect someone contacting them. I did not years ago and one of my references freaked the hell out. I just renewed and he was contacted and was an old hand at it but the first time he was convinced I was going to prison LOL....

They're checking someone's security clearance. They did this to some of my friends and family. You pretty much have to list everyone you know when filling one out.
They may also go talk to your neighbors that aren't on the list that you provided.

Also don't they normally mail you the request, not just come stick it ion your door?
When I was having my background check done to be a contractor at CDC some dozen years ago they mailed documentation forms to my references.
They try to call initially and follow up in person. If they can't get a reference on the phone they will contact the applicant and let them know to contact the reference and inform them they are attempting to contact them. I suspect they try to avoid going to anyone's door in person initially because they are SWAMPED with applicants and they only make about $500 per application. In 2023 a Secret Clearance Investigation that was straight forward and did not require any extra effort like contacting people in person paid the contractor about $450. Top Secret was about 10 times that. They do not put a lot of effort in for either....if they can't contact a reference they make the applicant responsible. If the applicant can't make contact they either have to supply another reference or the contractor will recommend denying the application.
