A hell of a lot easier now than it was 6-7 years ago. Written portion has been omitted- I had to write a will based on a given scenario. The year before had to draft a mortgage. The way I understand it, it’s just multiple choice (60 questions, 3 choices each), and reasearch multiple choice (using the statutes book) and I think short answer.

It gets pretty expensive ($1000+ by the time you pass) but I didn’t think it was all that hard. I’m a landman by trade, so pretty familiar with a lot of the concepts

as a requirement, but it would be difficult to find a bank where several of the staff were not notaries

Banks don’t have them as much anymore- too much liability.

wife used to give the notary test, daughter is a notary so I usually have to look elsewhere if I need something notarized, granted it's not often, but I've yet to go into a bank and not find a notary there

I did go into one bank that had limited their notarizing to account holders only, once

Somewhat related, why is Louisiana one of only nine states that require notarized car titles?

In Louisiana the notary used to be responsible for determining whether or not they were acknowledging a legal document. Every one of them I deal with nowadays just ascertain the identities of the persons who execute and witness the instrument.

So what you're saying is they can do nothing a lawyer does except happy hour at Olive or Twist?

They can draw up any legal docs that an attorney can.

Great, now I want a martini.

I'm saying they can draw up any legal binding documents that an attorney can do. There's a reason why the test is so hard. Granted most do not do this.

I took it in the mid 2000's. I got a study guide from a lady that had taken a class, studied it during a Monday afternoon chemistry class, and took the class that evening.

It was much harder than I expected, but I passed it on the first try.

Ive heard that the new tests are much more difficult though. I'd spend more than an hour studying.
