Yes, dumbass, an extra $18 is going to break my checkbook.

It's the principle of the whole thing. They charge more than twice as much as everyone else and bitch about people going somewhere else to buy books.

Shop local and online. If local can't come close enough where you don't feel you can justify the different, purchase online.

I don't get this thread. Online is a huge marketplace, obviously there are going to be items that you will get at a much bigger bargain than locally, sometimes local will compete.

Buy local if you feel you can walk way and be happy with the purchase. Go online when you feel locally you are getting hosed.

Yup. I'd placed the order and I'm not going to walk away from the purchase after they went to the trouble of ordering it for me.

Online shopping sure is easier.

And with Wal Marts online pickup, I haven't been in a grocery store in weeks.

Interesting times.

A mom and pop bookstore cannot compete with the large chains and especially Amazon. Amazon's start was book sales. They have always had the best prices on books. You won't beat Amazon.

You don't shop at a local book shop for the best prices. You shop for the conveinces of the store. Having harder to find books, used books, holding books, personal knowledge.

I shop a lot at Ace and True Value. I know I am paying a lot more than Home Depot or Lowes, but it's nice to have someone help me find the exact screws I need, or whatever else. The personal attention, the help, the quicker and simpler shopping experience. The big guys go for low mark-up and large volume. Little guys can't do that.
So many people shop Amazon now, I'm surprised any book store can stay open.

I Amazon when I hear of a book I want, I kindle it if I can, buy if I think it's shelf worthy. I go to the library a lot. Jefferson Parish has a really good regional library.

You shouldn't "screw local" over one way over key mark up though. I'm sure that's more the exception than the rule.

I quit going to local hardware stores. Today, when I have time to work on stuff, they are closed. HD and Lowes are not. Then there is selection. Most of the time when I go to the local hardware store, I wind up going to the big two because Mr. Local doesn't have what I need in stock.
