STAY AWAY FROM THE COSTUMED CHARACTERS IN TIMES SQUARE!!!! They are dirtbags and only want tips and they will hound you if you engage them and don't give them money. Quite a few of them have been arrested recently!

It's been said, but absolutely go to the Met. I've been here almost 2 years and I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago because I had family in town and needed something to show them. I was blown away with how great it is and I probably missed well over half of it after a full day of walking around.

1) View from the top of 30Rock is much better than the view from the top of Empire St. (I am yet to go to the new WTC, so can't compare that to the other two).

2) If you can go to only one museum, go to MET. Budget one whole day for MET

3) The Public Library is cool. The great reading room might be closed for renovation. Check before you go.

4) If you want real Chinese food Manhattan China Town is not the authentic China Town any more. The Flushing China Town is.

5) Go to Katz daily. Yes, it is touristy, but worth it imo.

6) If budget permits, go to Peter Luger

7) A trip to Liberty Island takes too much time.

8) I really like Washington Sq. park for people watching

9) Pack comfortable walking shoes. You will walk a lot.

My advice, skip Peter Luger's, go to Keen's near Herald Square. The place is a museum, having been open continuously since the 1800s. You'll see the pipes that Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and MacArthur smoked after dinner when you walk in (back when NYC still allowed smoking). Their scotch menu is three pages front and back. Old School with a capital "O". They only allowed women in by court order up until the 1920s.
