A lot!!!
For me NYC is the easy winner. I love that city.

that's the big ticket item, I grossed just under twice the OP's figure last year and wouldn't want to even consider raising kids in NYC, yes you can do it, but it certainly reduces your level of living, and I love NYC BTW

Well, you do surf. So easy for you.

New York. LA is too polluted, more dangerous, and the major natural disaster (earthquakes) tends to happen with no warning.

Can you imagine what private schools like Horace Mann cost in NYC. I'm sure it makes Newman, Country Day and McGhee's in NOLA look like nothing.
I will say kids from cities adapt to college life pretty seamlessly, especially if they went to top notch private schools. They are a little wiser to the ways of the world.

no question about it, and college is almost anticlimactic(as far as academics) after some of those upper end private schools

I didn't start learning new stuff until my Junior year.

that's the way it was for my daughter, she went to private school from K-12, then DePaul, and didn't really have much of a challenge till about then(jr. year)

I had some great teachers. 90% were called Doctor and most had taught at college level or other really high end private schools like Choate or Philips Exeter. Very lucky to be able to have that experience.
Also went to a summer program at Lawrenceville in New Jersey after 10th grade for two months. That was just awesome.
