It's one of the safer large cities.
We went for several days and were all over Manhattan, night and day, from the financial district to Harlem, riding buses and subways, walking in parks, etc. Never saw anything sketchy.
Felt 1,000 times safer than anywhere in New Orleans.

The Bronx is bad and some parts of Brooklyn can get sketchy as frick.
But you are correct, it is one of the safest big cities in the country.
