It’s the stupid hospitals that are at the root of all of this

Wherever we had our firstborn son, I was looking over the itemized bill and every time the nurse technician came in to take my wife’s blood pressure and body temperature, they charged us $365

Some young girl who barely speaks English and was lucky to graduate high school sticks a plastic thermometer in my wife’s mouth, hooks up an automated blood pressure cuff, and is back out the door in 60 seconds.

$365 per visit @ 3x day

In this case, my insurance paid for everything so we got lucky

It is bullshite charges like this that I think is what’s truly unnecessary, not the “care” itself

I thought the "just following orders" defense was shredded at Nuremberg.

Nuremberg was a low point in Western jurisprudence, for what its worth

We tortured those people.

Insurance should be a big pot of money which people pay into which is used to pay claims and operating expenses of the insurance company. After everything is paid and there is still excess money, that means they charged too much for premiums.

Instead, insurance has turned into companies that make money for it's shareholders. Look at these net incomes in the billions every year and continually increasing:

2023: UnitedHealth Group's net income was approximately $23.14 billion. Their revenue grew by $47.5 billion, or 14.6%, to $371.6 billion. Operating income was $32.4 billion, which is a 13.8% increase.

2022: UnitedHealth Group's net income was $20.6 billion, and their annual revenue was $324.16 billion.

2021: UnitedHealth Group's net income was $17.3 billion.

2020: UnitedHealth Group's net income was $15.4 billion.

2019: UnitedHealth Group's net income was $13.8 billion.

It does beg a question though. Are all doctors completely pure in their motivations and decision making?

No, and it's incredibly common for businesses and doctors, PAs, NPs, etc. in those businesses to perform procedures or services unnecessarily for financial gain. That is the primary reason insurance does this. People go to jail for it all the time, so imagine how many are getting away with it.

We guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe care or for unnecessary care to be delivered in a way which makes the whole system too complex and ultimately unsustainable

Hey dumbass, those decisions are between doctor and patient and it's the insurers that make things complex and unsustainable.

The obvious answer is no. Remember the opioid crisis was fueled by doctors handing out pain killers like candy.

Other than insurance, or self-pay patients, who provides the counterbalance to ensure the system operates optimally with only testing and treatment that will likely bring about the best outcome being done?

The answer is the government. Healthcare is a finite resource that has to be rationed. In socialized healthcare systems the government determines what’s covered and for how much. Works the same way in Medicare and Medicaid here. So those railing against insurance companies are really begging for the government to take over their healthcare. And of course the government will do it better, right?

What’s he supposed to say? That’s the business model. Insurance is a heavily regulated, low growth industry so if he wants his 10-30m a year compensation he’s got to play the game.

Scummy CEO memorializing his scummy company.

If he was smart he would be releasing zero public comments.
