In Chicago, yeah ... I could see why.
In Louisiana, a different story. Also depends on how old your children are when you build a pool. Mine are young and we'll get many years of future enjoyment out of it.

My uncle put in a real nice pool when his oldest was 10 and youngest was 6 or 7. Great use out of it for 12 years or so. Not much use now.

Raised spa with a nice waterfall makes for a nice atmosphere even when no one is in the pool.

Get a waterfall. A nice one is only around $2K. Also, go ahead a get a heat pump for it. Only around $3K and I'll not only heat but also cool the water.
