I'm surprised this isn't more well known. Buy this book. LINK
Here's a quick summary of the protocol by a third party:

This doctor proposes that there are different types of alzheimers -- for example one caused by inflammation and one caused by toxic exposure -- and that you can absolutely prevent the worsening of symptoms and sometimes even reverse them with various supplements and dietary/lifestyle changes.
There are also multiple facebook groups attached to this protocol. He gives very specific things to do including specific tests to find out what type you have. It is complex, but worth looking at.
Some recommendations include modified keto diet, intermittent fasting, getting good sleep, brain training, then a variety of supplements to add where blood tests dictate.

My FIL was diagnosed at 91 or so. He passed recently at 95. Just like in your case short term memory went first. In fact he could still remember some long term things for a long while. But he would repeat himself often with a story. He could no longer take care of himself relative to daily medicines. And he covered well for himself for some time before the diagnosis by writing lists. He passed in assisted living with cardiovascular disease but his mind was pretty much gone. In the end he slept a lot. He did get cantankerous to the point of being mean and being physically argumentative with the staff at the home as well as with my wife who is an only child. We were floored by the diagnosis of late onset moderate Alzheimers. The neurologist came in and made the diagnosis via testing. It happened pretty quickly. If your father has dementia the doc will be able to tell you quickly. Four of five siblings in my FILs family got a form of severe dementia. I tease my wife about her chances. We laugh. But I shouldn't do that.
