Nepotism in your workplace

The hiring of Rob Ryan by Rex this weekend got me thinking about stories of nepotism at work. I know the OT has some good ones. Let's hear them.

It can be good or bad depending on the quality of the company and owner. I have seen a case where the only person who could get through to the owner was the family member and it really helped the business a lot.

I'll comment on this once I get these reports over to my dad.

I was given money to start my operations so I would shut the frick up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I used to work at a Baton Rouge law firm where 4 attorneys and one paralegal shared the same last name and various others in and out for summer employment.

I worked for a project management contractor. One guy I worked with was the nephew of our GM. He was just terrible at everything. It took him being caught sleeping and on pills by our biggest client while he was on safety observation duty watching some guys fit pipe. It took 3 weeks after his pee pee test came back positive for him to get run off.
Also worked for a family owned business and the owner was a maniac. Wanted everything done his way and right now. He would literally through a temper tantrum and kick rocks outside the office trailer if the smallest thing went wrong. Don't know if that counts.

quote:Not my current job but my very first job. Business owner co-owned the business with his mother in-law and ran it with the help of his wife and mother. Administrative stuff was done by the family but he hired other people for the donkey work.
Nepotism in your workplace
Business turned into a success and now he is retired at 36 with a lovely family.
Nepotism success stories are hard to find. Maybe the OT will prove me wrong.

currently, my boss is married to the CEO. His son is head of sales, and the son's wife is in charge of marketing. They also hired his nephew to try sales. Everybody except the nephew (he's new, so i can't judge) and CEO are very competent.
there's 9 people in the company and only 4 of us don't share blood.
great family and they treat the rest of us very well.
However... at a school district i was at recently (A large 6A district in TX with 12k> students:
The superintendent's daughter was the school's legal counsel. Her other daughter was a Director of Special Ed.
The Deputy Sup's sister was an assistant principal.
The next dep sup was married to a principal (direct boss)
The Director of elementary ed's sister was the Dep Sup's secretary.
Director of Student Service was married to a principal.
the Curriculum director's wife was the head school nurse.
The head of finance was married to the head of purchasing (her direct boss)
the head of HR is married to an Assistant Principal
The DC's wife got a job as the girl's soccer coach at a perennial power despite never being more than assistant in her career.
the FB coaches wife is Asst. Director of SpEd.

At my last job, the manager hired his son to work with everyone. His son got all of the easy jobs, constant praise, and a couple more raises than anyone else. He would constantly break equipment, blame others, and never have any consequences.
I know not all managers would be that bad, but that was a terrible situation.

I got hired at my current position because my best friend is in charge of hiring for this position, so there's that...

It's true. If they like you they will promote you. Why? Because you are someone they can get along with... it's just the sad fact of the matter.

If you want NFL-related stories, look no further than the Redskins OC.

NFL Offensive Coordinator at 27 years old. Dude most likely has talent and work ethic, but I'm sorry, even so, that still just doesn't happen.
quote:
McVay certainly boasts strong football lineage. His grandfather, John, coached in the World Football League and NFL in the 1970s and spent 21 years in the San Francisco 49ers’ front office, winning five Super Bowls. Sean’s father, Tim, was recruited by Jay Gruden’s father, Jim, and played at Indiana.
quote:
McVay calls himself “really fortunate and blessed” to get that job, acknowledging his family’s connection with the Grudens helped. But he aimed to ensure his work ethic allowed him to stick around.

Hasn't worked well in our family, spouse-wise or kid-wise. However, sibling-wise it's been fine.
