I did Jackson and Yellowstone earlier this summer. Stay in the town of Jackson, not the ski resort, go to Cowboy bar at night. Also, check out this Thai restaurant, here you can find good home brews. Rent at paddle board and check out Jenny Lake and String Lake when you are in the Teton national park. If you do any camping buy bear spray! and of course pick up your trash. It's a beautiful part of the country.
Eat BISON. Not that ground meat burger crap you can find here but a nice cut of bison meat.

Obviously Mt. Rushmore.
If you can check out Devil's Tower I would recommend seeing that. The drive into SD on Hwy 34 is nice.
There are also many scenic byways in that part of the state. The Badlands Byway and the Peter Norbeck are worth seeing.
The Black Hills and Badlands of SD are beautiful. There are a lot of cool little towns. I am partial to Spearfish and Lead.

In my 33 day trip Mt Rushmore was the worst 4 hours experience. It's a total waste of a day, and I do not recommend that.

I can only speak for Yellowstone, as I worked there one summer while in college, but ask any of the employees (especially the students if they are still there ) for the best...least crowded....places to explore. They get time off to travel around the park & I know we always went to the unknown/least known scenic attractions to avoid the crowds. For example, the crowds watching Old Faithful can be packed in like sardines; whereas there is a hiking path up a nearby mountain that gives a heck of a lot better view & all the park's employees used to hike up for the view & privacy. Bring your own booze if applicable, as like everything else in the park, it's expensive. Do not follow bear tracks through the woods. There is always a bear at the other end. ( lesson learned )
