Need Recommendations for Big Bend

We are trying to go there in October. Side note - we have small children. What would be a good area to stay? We have a tent, but would prefer a cabin if it's available. What are some things that can be done there, that aren't too difficult on small children?

Chisos mountain lodge for most of you visit
Fort Davis Indian Lodge for a night
Do a star party at McDonald observatory
The Ranger programs
Get the junior ranger books when you get there so the kids can earn badges
The weather should be great, lots of fun hiking.

Have your kids even been tent camping? If not, this wouldn't be a good time and place to start.

Yes, right in the basin near the lodges. lots of primitive camping as well but I'm not big on that. I like comfort 
I've been 6 times I think. 3 with the kids 3 without
Star party is a must.
Explore the Fort Davis national historical site (kids can earn a junior ranger patch there too)

Great place. Pretty much anywhere you go you can't do wrong.
For the easiest stay with the most to do, just do Chisos Canyon. And the lodge they have there.

Just got back from Davis Mountain, BBNP and BBRSP. We had a great time. If your kids haven't tent camped I wouldn't start here. There are too many animals out there for the inexperienced. The Chisos trail map was covered with Mountain Lion and Bear sightings so staying in a tent as a newbie there is asking for trouble. There are lodges in Chisos that are nice.
Star and Twilight parties are a must. Sunset at the scenic overlook at Davis Mountain is a must.
We will be going back.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even think of the wild animals...I've never been to a big national park that has them.

There aren't many bears and they eat nuts and berries
The mountain lions are real, but the warnings everywhere are to keep folks alert. You just need to keep your small children near you and know to put them on your shoulders if you encounter one. You will be fine in the tents. But don't let your small children walk around outside without you/

Yeah, stay in the chisos basin either in a tent or cabin. Tent camping is fine up there. It's a large campground with a big ranger station and restaurant. Take the family on a guided horseback ride to the "window." There are several easy day hikes and scenic drives, using Chisos basin as your HQ.
My only advice for going with kids is don't do any overnight hikes (trail camping) or camp in really remote areas of the park. Wildlife, or threat thereof, can freak kids out. But I've never felt unsafe. We just did a multi-day hike through the desert and over the Chisos last spring. Didn't see any bears or lions.
Enjoy! Big Bend is a treasure.

Are there any actual cabins to reserve for a reasonable price? I've only seen lodges at Chisos Basin. The lodge there is like $130 / night, which I'm not really looking to pay as we are on a budget. The website isn't very intuitive, so it's hard to figure out if there are any actual cabins to rent.
