Why is that?
I've been focusing on this at address and my short game has been really good as of late

For chipping, use the bounce on the sole of the wedge. For pitching, control distance with length of backswing but always accelerate through the ball. The biggest problem people have when pitching is decelerating through the impact zone

Read Dave Pelz's The Short Game Bible.. If you follow his instruction and drills, your game will improve immensely.

Just from these tips, I've been doing it all wrong.
Need to focus on weight on front foot, keep left wrist straight and accelerate through the ball while taking a short backswing.

My best advice is to hit the green on your approach shot and avoid chipping

Birdieball - try these at home
Like someone said, the lie won't be the same off a mat or in the grass at your house, but it gives you something to hit and work with. It flies like a real golf ball as far as slicing and fading and all. It gives you a contact response.
Edit: That doesn't respond on how to hit the ball. Can't tell you because I suck as well. Look at youtube, find some drills. Get lessons. More of the standard answer.

You've got to differentiate between chipping and pitching. Different techniques

I've got birdie balls and love them

Also, chipping is way harder to frick up than pitching
The longer swing and more body movement bring in all sorts of variables
If I can't putt it, I'll chip it first, and pitch second

ETA: Nevermind, I just tried it in my office and front foot feels perfect.

Weight on the front foot ensures a swing down into the ball. Uses loft for bounce instead of sweeping the ball off the ground.

I don't see how that works, but OK.
Dude I'm not a great golfer, I play like 3 times a year just for fun. If I'm relatively close to the green, I'll just "short" my swing, I don't really know what the term is. Like, I'll take a normal backswing but basically stop the clubhead as soon as it hits the ball, no real followthrough. That usually gets it up pretty good, which is fine if it doens't have to go very far.
If I'm farther out to where I can't do it, I'll just aim somewhere else, either somewhere else on the green away from the bunker or just try to put it somewhere close.
