Need help with pitching and chipping

I'm decent off the tee and approach shots, but my chipping and pitching is awful. So awful that I will putt any chance I get. I either chunk it or skull it and it is embarrassing. I have no confidence.
Looking at buying a mat and net for my back yard. Anybody have any recommendations?

Drive the green, or just quit flipping your hands at the ball. Keeps hands in front of the clubface

I don't think I've used a wedge in probably over 5 years.
If I'm within 20 yards of the green I take my 7 and just take a very easy, almost half swing. Essentially like I'm putting, just with more backswing and more force.
If I'm a little farther away I'll do the same thing but with a 9 and a little more force.
I'm atrocious with a wedge, I ended up just giving up on trying to use them.

Mat won't help much
My best tip is put your weight on front foot and don't try to help the ball in the air, let the clubs loft do the work

Don't buy a mat first off. It will not help you at all.
The thing that has helped me most with solid contact on chips is really focusing on keeping my wrists solid. I think of it as an extended putting stroke.
For pitches, my biggest issue is keeping my head still. I find when I make a conscious effort to keep my eye on where the ball is until well after impact, I make my best contact.

You won't get the same kind of lie on a mat or on your backyard grass. Go to a decent driving range or a course and practice chipping around the practice green. While you're at it, spend a few bucks and take a lesson. The pro will teach you the right way to do it. You've probably got a key component to your stroke wrong.

Never had a bunker in between your ball and the green?

Of course, the 9 works just fine.
Obviously I use a wedge if I'm IN the sand though, but if I'm on grass I don't use em.

Good advice.
Go on youtube because there are instruction videos.
Keep your front arm stiff, head down on the ball and lower body still. Don't have your wrists going all willy nilly either. Narrow stance and choke down on the club.

Stop avoiding chips and pitches. Practice them often. Can you chip and pitch decently at your practice facility? I know plenty of people who can hit the shots, but like you (and me sometimes) you lose confidence on the course.
Obviously we know that mishits at that range can blow up a hole, but avoid the temptation to avoid. Your confidence won't increase until you start hitting those shots.
I'm all for playing the game in a way that makes it enjoyable, but sometimes confidence building just requires fricking it up for a while.

I encounter shots every round where there is no way to get it close using a 9 iron
If like to see how you handle those situations

bend your knees. keep your head down. keep your left arm straight.
if you're chunking it, just move the ball back in your stance. if you're hitting the top, keep your knees bent and don't pop up mid swing.

I don't see how that works, but OK.

Lock your wrists and think of your swing plane as a clock.

Don't deaccelerate (spelling?)

I can't tell if most of these tips refer to pitching or chipping
The swing I use for each is very different
I'm very wristy and I open the face for pitch shots
