Yea, I considered that too.
Another thing that I couldn't get a straight answer on when talking to the guard guys was say IF i went to OCS and was an O1E in the guard, but then I wanted to go active duty Army, would my rank carry over into the Army or not. Never could get a straight answer on that one.
I'm going through the process now to just go MC Reserve. I'll probably just drop a WO package in a couple years. I just hope they let me keep E-5. I've been out for a while.

What is awhile? You should be fine being prior service to MC reserves keeping Sergeant. WO package might be difficult depending on MOS & I&I unit. But hell when I left recruiting I know the USMCR were getting guaranteed sniper school slots and other great infinitives & slots.

Don't do it unless you go to OCS, but don't do the weekend OCS thing. Just find a gap in school/work and go to real OCS at Benning.
As an officer, you'll enjoy the Army and will have unlimited potential to excel and try new things.

What was your MOS in the corps? if you are in good shape go infantry, Georgia has one of the better reserve IBCTs and you will make rank at or below zone.

If you have a degree, or are close to it, drop a warrant packet and fly Blackhawks out of Hammond.
You can probably do that as an officer, too, but I don't know if those slots are as easy to come by.

You should be fine from 10-16 because if you did 4 years active that counts as your "enlistment age" and you're credited those 4 years.
So say you enlisted at 18, did 4 years. You would be 22 when you got out. You have been out 6 years so now you're 28. But with your 4 years of service you are 24 to enlistment requirements. I remember working with kids and they wernt going to lose rank. You will have a date gap but no biggie. For prior service talk to a PSR recruiter much more knowledgable then a regular recruiter with jobs/units & required paperwork.

As for transferring from the Guard to Active. Be careful on the Guard side and what they tell you. Yes, you CAN do it and it's a very easy process, literally nothing more then a letter from the 1st General in the Chain of Command on the Guard side releasing you and then you can process to the Active component.
However, if I actually got that letter from the guard for all the people that wanted to flip, I would have been a super star in recruiting. In 4 years I think I got 2, and both were shite heads that weren't attending drill.
As recruiters we didn't fill the Guards ranks, they have their own recruiters. The never allowed Soldiers to go from the Guard to Active because that created an open slot in a unit that was tough to fill for them. I had great success flipping them from Reserve to Active though, we recruited for reserve units and even had specific monthly missions for the units in our area.

Another thing to consider (unless things have changed)only like the top 10-15% of grads get to choose their MOS, the rest go where there is a need.

Thanks. I've been talking to the PSR in NO. Pretty cool guy. Getting paperwork in to get cleared with MEPS.
Can you confirm the VA disability situation? I have a rating and don't want to lose it by going Reserve. I've been told on several occasions that I won't lose my VA Disab Comp, but rather that I would instead just have my daily rate deducted while on drill status.

Yes you have to report your status to the VA & they will prorate it. My last unit I was at was Wounded Warrior Bn on Lejeune. The staff is 90% reservist. My section leader had a rating and she didn't tell the VA and when they found out they took the money. Her situation is more different because she was considered active in that billet/unit but yes you need to contact the VA.

Generally it doesn't happen because of retention. Think about it this way... Does the Army allow soldiers to transfer to the Guard before their commitment is up? No. It's a numbers game.
I'm not criticizing Marines here, but many who go in to the Guard hate it. It's not the same. One is part time. The other is full time. At drill, certain things have to happen. There's a lot of administrative crap and mandatory briefings that have to happen. It's that way in all reserve components. You can't just show up and train. I think that's what most people hate about it.

Yea, that basically goes hand in hand with what i've been told. Just want to make sure i'm not going to lose that. Any info on how the medical/tri-care situation works for the reserves? What about BAH for drill weekends?

Remember how much you hate annual training on the computer? Imagine a reserve unit doing this during a weekend. Hurry up & wait to the max. It's a lot of sitting around.

IIRC you can purchase Tricare for 50/month? Don't quote me but I think that's what it is. However that is for the service member. No dependents and they won't qualify. No BAH they are supposed to "room you" if you're 50+ miles away.

It absolutely is because of retention, but the recruiters on the Guard side tell applicants they can and to join the Guard first to get their "feet wet" instead of committing to Active initially.
