The wife and I will be kid free the last week of this month and are trying to find somewhere to go within a 8-10 hr drive. We often travel to the beach so that's out. We were thinking Austin, but haven't been so don't know what to expect. What do the fine people of the OT suggest.

Depends on what you (and wife) are into. Shopping? Sights? Outdoors? Nightlife? Eateries?

Let me look up a post of mine from a few days ago.

outdoors mostly. No need for shopping. Nightlife wouldn't hurt also.

Hop on a train from Hammond to Chicago and have a real vacation. Chicago is a great place to visit in the summer. You won't need a car at all.

Rent a cabin in Gatlinburg and enjoy the Smoky Mountains.

Go to VRBO.com to find decent deals on cabins

Doing the same type thing next month. Tired of beach scene and wanting to do something different. Not going as far as the smokies because we're bringing the dogs, but going to hot springs at end of August. Renting a house on lake and bringing boat.

- Loads of live music options; do a search to see who's playing while you're in town
- Lake Travis is full - get yourself invited to a boat party
- Hamilton Pool - awesome outdoors spot, have to get there early as it is limited entry
- See the bats come out from under the Congress Avenue bridge, end of July is about the right time for the newborns to start flying
- Do indoor skydiving at iFLY and then eat a burger at Phil's Ice House next door
- Friday night fireworks at the Triple A ball park (RR Express) if there's a game

Do Rainey Street one of the nights.

Avoid dirty 6.

If you do Austin and want to do a cocktail bar, check out Midnight Cowboy on 6th St. It's named after the brothel that used to exist on site. Need to reserve in advance FYI.

Rainey Street is a street with a bunch of houses that were converted into bars, and it has some laid back spots. It's pretty cool.

The hottest I've ever been was in Austin. I would much rather the humidity for some odd reason than scorching dry heat.

Ages? Austin is great, but I could only give advice for twenty-somethings.
