Nov 21, 2016. I was in the CICU at Grandview Hospital in Hoover, AL. I was seven days past open-heart surgery to replace my faulty mitral valve with a mechanical mitral valve. One of the things about having a mechanical valve is you have to go on blood thinner ASAP to prevent blood from clotting on the valve. The only blood thinner you can take though is Coumadin. When you first go on Coumadin they cannot tell how much to give you. Well, they gave my far too much . What happened is my blood was so thin I began bleeding from the sutures in my heart. I was bleeding out into my chest cavity. The bleeding got to the point it filled my chest cavity with blood and my heart could not beat. It stopped my heart. I coded. They rushed me to surgery. First they cut open my abdomen because they thought my intestines had “died”. Then they cracked my chest back open and discovered the real issue. They cut a “window” in the sac around my heart to allow that blood to drain, reinserted the drain tubes in my chest (they’d been removed a few days before), and gave me enough blood transfusions to get me going again. Basically, I’d bled out by the time my heart had stopped. How long I was gone, I still don’t know. I know my heart stopped sometime that night after about 6 PM. It did not beat on its own until they did the surgery.

I personality have no memory of any of it. The last thing I remember was when the nurses made me get out of my recliner to get back in the bed. That was around 5:30 - 6:00 PM. Everything after that until about 1:00 AM when I woke up in the bed on a ventilator is a complete blank. I didn’t even know how serious the situation was until later that morning when all the team of doctors and surgeons came during moring rounds to check on me. I remember the surgeon who opened up my abdomen was the one who said something that clued me in. He said “you look a lot better this morning. Of course the last time I saw you though, you were dead”.

(I know this story will trigger some, especially the troll TigerShit08 and the worthless junky felon SS. But I honestly don’t give a shite about either of them. Everything I’ve said is true. The fact they can’t accept it is their problem.)

Did your experience change your faith one way or the other?

Absolutely. By all medical science I should not have survived even the first open heart surgery on Nov. 14. I was admitted to the hospital on Nov. 7. I was in stage 4 congestive heart failure due to my cleft mitral valve. I was to the point all my organs had shut down and I wasn’t even digesting food any more. My cardiologist didn’t tell me until months later, but his initial assessment was I had less than 10% chance of surviving open-heart surgery. Not only did I survive it, I survived a second emergency heart and abdomen surgery seven days later, even after I’d internally bled out. Bottom line is the only thing that kept me here is God wasn’t done with me.

Almost died. 5-6 months in the hospital STRAIGHT. Closed and sold my businesses and went back to school. Last semester is this spring then an internship to get my license.

Still agnostic, if there is an almighty then why is he such a dick? If he created everything then why is there so much bad shite in the world? Still I think you have to be pretty ignorant to think there is ZERO possibility of a higher power and to think that there is no way the higher power couldn't be a dick.

Not being an a-hole here (though it comes.so naturally to me). We grow up with this image of Jesus in our own image, whereas in reality he would have looked different. One would think if it were a hallucination/dream state kind of thing, they would see him in the unrealistic but traiditional image we have of Jesus. Whereas if you meet the real hombre, he’d likely have a more middle-Eatern Jewish look to him.

Not trying to be an a-hole but don’t you think an all powerful being could take whatever form he wanted to. Maybe whatever form you are most familiar with to make you comfortable.

I’m not saying that’s what happens. I’m simply saying seeing Jesus a certain way isn’t going to prove or disprove NDEs

I understand where you are coming from but if life after death is eternal is the short term suffering that happens in this life really that big of a deal?

Let’s say you die and you are in this incredible place and everyone you ever knew is there to. Do you think you would look back at this life with resentment or understand it was apart of a bigger picture? I feel like anything that would happen in this life no matter how egregious would be essentially meaningless in the presence of eternal life or some sort or reincarnation.

Yes. No person has ever died and then “come back to life.”

However, there are many doctors who claim that NDEs are caused from the drugs administered to those who are dying

Mostly just epi, which your body naturally has. Also maybe amiodarone, sodium bicarb, none of that causes jack squat, NDEs are simply seeing real stuff. Worked as a medic, and had patients tell me some good stories over the years

I don’t know if you’d call what happened to me as “dying”. But my heart did stop along with all bodily functions. And I was in that state however long it took for them to get me from the CICU to the operating room and do the surgery I described above.

Honest question, what would you call that?

You were near death, but still alive. You had a near death experience, which can have strong psychological effects.

Glad you made it through man. That’s rough.

One of my biggest fears is having my chest cracked open. I’ve had 3 close family members go through it. I’m doing everything I can to avoid it.

Darth, I got no beef with you or this post.

When I saw the OP, I chuckled because I read it as a “Near Darth Experience”

Glad you’re not (or no longer) dead.

The first one was not bad. They were careful with the incision so I had a nice neat scar. Didn’t even break any ribs. The second surgery though they broke all my ribs and my scar is a lot more rough.

Back in the late 80’s I stopped in a hole in a wall redneck bar it was probably around midnight. This pretty girl grabs my hand and pulls me on the dance floor. We dance a couple songs, then her and her friends ask if I want to go to another bar I said sure. We walk out into the dark parking lot a guy comes up and puts a gun to my head . I’m thinking he wants to rob me but no he crying “ I’m gonna kill you mother fricker”. Apparently the girl I danced with was his girlfriend. Now this is before cell phones do you couldn’t just call 911. A guy walks outside that was mutual friend of us both and after about 10 minutes he talks him into not killing me. He was sobbing uncontrollably even after they got the gun . I was pretty shaken up. I can remember thinking how upset my mom and dad was gonna be

I suppose so. It’s just the old teacher in me that protested.
