Navy guys: how do you fill your down time?

Just watching Das Boot and I got to wondering about this-
When your at sea for months at a time what do you do to keep yourself occupied during your off time? How much, during a routine day/week do you have?
I'd imagine that today you can get on the internet, Skype home, watch movies and such. What about you older guys in the days before the Internet and iPads with thousands of books stored on them? Especially on a submarine... I'd imagine that playing cards with the same few guys gets old fast.

From what I hear they spend most of their downtime playing hide the sausage with their crew mates.
But I'm an old Army guy so I can't say for sure.

It was easy to tell where the sausage was hid when the returned to port. All them baby bumps gave it away.

Never lived on a Navy ship before but I'm around people who have all day every day. I did live on ships and oil rigs for years prior to the Navy. Most ships have wifi on them nowadays. I have friends post stuff while underway all the time. Work days are different for everyone. If you're a bottom of the barrel enlisted guy then you're working 15 hours a day every day. Some jobs require that sailors get minimum amounts of sleep every day (aircrew and pilots). Most sailors spend lots of time working out. Some ships hit port a few times a month for a few days at a time. Carriers make port less often because of their size.

All joking aside now when I was in I wrote letters and loved receiving mail and packages. Now I guess you can just Skype and email. Best part for me was pulling into foreign ports and seeing the world. Unfortunately as a 18 year old this included large amounts of alcohol. Loved my time in and loved serving this great country
