I retire in just over a month. I'm 43.

Thanks Uncle Sam.

Not everyone gets a career job at 22 anymore. Plenty of folks get one closer to 30 now and that’s saying they should work till they are 70. That’s freaking stupid and wasting your life

If you love your job it’s not wasting your life. Wasting your life is spending every day on selfish pursuits.

My attitude has changed significantly as I have gotten closer to being able to retire.

I have always said that retirement is the dream. However, it is the stability/option to retire is the goal. It is a dollar amount, not an age in my mind.

What I have seen through friends retiring is that you need one or even two hobbies to retire happily. Golf, tennis, fishing, hunting, volunteering, etc.

Looking like I will reach my number in my early 60’s. 2-3 days per week at the camp. A trip or two. However, I see myself continuing to work a few days per week. Just to keep the brain busy.

Who knows, this may all change again. Interesting thread.
________

I retired at 55 and love it. We owned some rent houses and slowly did some remodeling and started selling them. I also coach youth football and basketball. Both wife and I started volunteering by getting connected with a group that does odd jobs for elderly folks. I work half days unless I feel like not working that day.

On the financial side, I had a 20 year plan to leave my primary career because it was a high stress environment. Retiring at 55 takes a lot of planning, then working the plan. I built up investments, starting with stocks and moving into real estate. I have only touched my 401k once in over 5 years, and that was to buy new vehicles for both wife and myself.

Spoken like someone who’s never had an ex-wife take you to the cleaners, or who’s never had a business fail for any of a thousand different reasons, some your fault, and some out of your control.. but by all means, dont let me stop you from standing in judgement of everyone’s else’s situation .

So you bear no blame for those decisions? Sorry, Karen. Grow up.

retired from the Military at age 49 with 31 years. I'll be drawing a six figure pension until I die which is hopefully a long time from now.

I don't get that much but I get about 3k in taxable military pay and 4100.00 in tax free VA disability plus I am an outside industrial sales engineer but next year I am giving that up. My wife wants to keep teaching a few more years but I'm about done.
