My dogs got skunked…
Posted by lesserof2weevils

It’s so bad. The dogs reek, my house reeks, the whole neighborhood smells. If you’ve never experienced it fresh and close, let me tell you, it’s unbelievable. I don’t know why any animal with a brain would ever mess with a skunk. I may have to burn it all down.

Cans of tomato juice + dog = post skunk bath

mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1-2 teaspoons of dish soap. Apply the mixture to your dog's coat, avoiding their eyes and mouth, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Repeat as needed.

Tomato juice works. Then finish it off with a regular shampoo or dawn bath

1) Give the dogs enough food and water for 10 days.
2) Leave the house for 10 days.
3) Return after 10 days to collect dogs.
4) Burn down house and all belongings.
5) Collect insurance money.
6) Buy new house and furniture.

Peroxide, baking soda and dawn dish soap, it works

They’ve gotten baking soda, peroxide and Dawn baths. It’s not even the dogs anymore, they just caused it. You can smell it half a mile away and it happened last night.

This is the most reasonable answer.

Rub him/her down w a mix of tomato paste and sauce, let it sit for half an hour or so then wash. Rinse and repeat until odor is gone or tolerable.

Annnnndd… we just found the skunk disemboweled in the woods behind the house. Don’t think the dogs did it. Looks like an owl. Wish it had happened in front of the trail cam. No idea the sequence of events.

You positive they caused it?
If the skunk was dead and you have labs, they might have rolled in the dead carcass for awhile. I have had labs do this in the past.
Labs love to roll in stinky things.

Never tried it on dogs, but I have used a mix of old school plain white vinegar and good brand baking soda to get smell out of furniture and such.

I’m thinking that an owl exploded the skunk, and the dogs were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They ran in begging for help, puking and drooling. Also possible that they just fafo.

Heard if you piss on them the smell will go away and deter further skunkings from happening

I know a dog that has been sprayed five different times. He acts like it is his life's mission to find a skunk, frick with it, and get sprayed. I don't think the ol' baw has a sense of smell. Or taste......because you can taste a close skunk smell.

One of ours took a direct hit about three months ago.
We did everything…the top of her head still smells.

Did you try shaving the top of her head and let it grow back?
I have a hound we shear like a sheep because the hair gets so quick so fast

this happened to my dog a few years ago--direct hit in the face which meant even though I bathed her with the dawn-peroxide-baking soda mix I couldn't put that on her face near her eyes so she reeked for MONTHS. Also it penetrates the pads of their feet and their nose and every time it rains and they get wet for months it brings the stink again.
It is horrible. My dog ran inside shaking her head and flinging the stuff on kitchen cabinets and walls. Every item inside the cabinets reeked and I had to throw away cereals and other food . Coats hanging inside the closed hall closet reeked and had to go to the dry cleaner.
I cried a lot.
