pitbulls bite bc of their protective instincts too. frick that. my kid got bit at a state park by some fricking bulldog built like Rocky IV. MY kid was on his bike and fell off right next to him being walked by a small girl, he lunged at my boy and breaking skin pretty bad on his leg... if that was his neck... it could have been bad. frick dogs that bite. All of them. frick them.
Well that sounds like the work of dumb fricking owners. You have to be aware of how your dog acts and how it responses in situations. If a dog lunged at a little boy who just fell off his bike and gave him a pretty good bite, that is behavior the owners should be aware of.
It could have been something the dog never did before (lung at someone who falls down or who is down), but it seems like the owners would at least know he would be capable of doing something like that.
And if that dog was built like Rocky IV. He could have done some damage. On paper, Drago was going to kill Rocky, but Rocky had heart..

A lot of this sounds like your fault in enabling the situation. First time he ever growled at you for anything, you needed to rectify it.
No need to punish him after the fact, but you need to have a few rough and tumble sessions each week and let the motherfricker have it. Manhandle him and pin him on the ground and don't let him up even if he struggles. You need to establish your dominance. He'll eventually give up.
Next thing is not allowing him on furniture. Get his own bed, but don't let him on the bed/couch/chair.
