Mine is more than mild. I'm 36 and had fusion surgery at 31 for C5-C7. The procedure immediately relieved the majority of symptoms. Unfortunately, C3-C4 is also herniated and symptoms are progressing. I also have disc problems and stenosis in T6-T8 and L3-S1

Have you had any complications since your surgery?

Try stem cell before surgery. It saved me an immense amount of agony from the surgery route

No. The surgery was extremely successful. While waking up from anesthesia I remember touching my hands and squeezing my fingers. It was the 1st time in some time I wasn't numb, tingling or weak. I'm happy I had the surgery but both discs were severely herniated and would only get worse.
From my research, many people with unsuccessful spine surgeries put off the procedure as long as possible creating more and more scar tissue and nerve damage. I asked my doctor and 2nd opinion doc about that and they both agreed they see it all the time. That and rapidly progressing symptoms convinced me to move forward

I will definitely look into it. Thank you

What symptoms do you have? It doesnt sound like you need surgery

That's exactly how I'm feeling. What started out as some neck pain, has quickly worsened to arm pain and numbness, and really bad headaches.

Also, if the disc gets worse and eventually ruptures requiring a surgical intervention, ask about ADR (artificial disc replacement). I wanted it but my insurance company wouldnt pay for it on a multi level fusion. Germany is ahead of us in this technology right now but hopefully we catch up by the time i need surgery again

I’m better off than I was before back surgery.
Sometimes it is the only thing that works.

Laser Spine Institute is an answer to prayer

Been going through it for about 5 years now. C7 in my neck. I had a discectomy in 2014 that only worked for about 3 1/2 years. I'm living on Advil and Percocets when it flares up really bad. It sucks arse. I've done the injections, PT, etc and nothing helps. I have been afraid to go with the fusion but the doc says that is my only remaining option. fricking bad genes.

L4-5 herniation with L4 nerve root impingement which hurts like a mfer. Got an epidural steroid injection, which did not help. Did PT, which made it worse. Consulted with a neurosurgeon and he recommended against surgery. Wants to do a nuroforaminal injection, which goes directly into the level.
Also have a small herniation at L5-S1 that does not cause any symptoms at all, so it just depends on your symptoms.
I would do everything in your power to try conservative before surgery. When I first herniated L4-5 3 or so months ago I could not walk. Now I can walk but it just hurts. Give it some time and agree, stay away from the opiods. Nasty stuff.

What were your symptoms that caused you to seek medical attention? Pain and numbness in your arms/shoulders? Any weakness? If it was my neck, I’d take the surgical option. It will only get worse as you get older.

Fibromyalgia is a myth and your cousin is a pussy. When was his last period?

quote:In general, I agree with this. However, I had stenosis last year from a lumbar herniation. I suffered for months before I finally decided on a surgery - and it was massively successful. The reason I decided to proceed was because microdiskectomies are pretty mundane procedures for a good neurosurgeon. They shouldn't have to go anywhere near the actual spinal cord.
I know at least 4 people that have had back surgery and every one of them is worse off than they were before.
So, if the OP has a protruding disc, then I think surgery should be at least considered.

My FIL had it in the 3-4-5 area. Two surgeries and a year and a half later he is back to normal. But, he is 85.

My understanding is if you have an "average" case, then there's a 40% chance your body will remediate the problem over time. If you can take the pain, might pay to hold out.

Surgery is always bad news, unfortunately. If u get one surgery, you are guaranteed another one or more.

We all have abnormalities regarding our spines. It’s just a question of whether we have symptoms. If we do we should try all the conservative treatments first. Even the weird ones like old Chinese dude with dry needles or whatever.
