I remember my great grandpa talking about the 73 flood and they just let those baws setup right there on the levee and shoot anything that came running out

Is it worth the drive from BR to go see them open it?

I own a camp in Butte LaRose. There's so much more water this time than last time.
It's screwed.

I figured they would have had some sort of rules in place.

Yeah the problem is it’s been building and has been higher longer than in 2011

Bump for new WWL story. Not much new info though. As usual, td was a better source of info than the news.

I was out there Sunday. I've never seen the canal that high.

Yes and no. I drove up there in 2011 and was turned away. Luckily, I talked a media person into letting me go with him at a local gas station.

Without that kind of luck, you won't be able to see much.

Did I hear this correctly, they are opening the Morganza to around 150,000 cubic feet per second which is 1/2 of what they did in 2011?

Seems as though there is more water coming down this time around?

There isn't quite as much as in 2011 but it is apparently high enough to threaten to overtop the spillway structure. In 2011, it was going to get above set limits for Baton Rouge.

So they're not going to need to keep it at 45' in BR, since it should never get to that point, just keep the river from overtopping the structure.

That's my understanding of the situation at least.

Right. Compared to 2011 there isn't as much water coming down which is why the levels aren't as high as back then (about a foot lower this time around). The difference this time as opposed to last time is the amount of sediment at the bottom of the river. It has increased enough to raise the riverbed so high that it takes less water to threaten overtopping the Morganza structure than it did ever before.

This is going to become the biggest talking point after the current waters go down to below flood stage. What has been feared in the past is beginning to occur - the riverbed is silting up so much that it takes less and less water to threaten lives and property. I'd imaging the current flood is depositing tremendous amounts of new silt as well, resulting in an even higher river bed.

Dredging is going to HAVE to happen if government is serious about correcting this problem.
