What does the water level currently look like? Is this going to be as bad as 2011?

the Old River Control Structure moved a bit in 2011 and the biggest fear regarding the river has always been its failure. There would literally be nothing stopping it from carving a new path and that would be on the scale of 25 9/11's with the economic impact of losing the BR and NOLA ports.

Why hasn't a backup plan or secondary structure been put in place if this is the case? One piece of hardware to protect everything below seems foolish

Since the near failure in 1973, 2 more structures have been added. The hydro-plant and the auxiliary structure. Ultimately, this is just delaying the inevitable. The structure will fail 1 day if another plan is not developed. I hope we don’t live to see it

Nearly as high as 2011, but what’s different this time is that the red river is high this time around. The red is currently going down and almost back below flood stage but with what’s going on in Oklahoma we should see another rise. Both rivers up at the same time is brewing for the perfect storm

thought one bay was open and by June 2nd will be opening many more. One bay to drive the wildlife out slowly and prepare homeowners.

That’s exactly how they did it in 2011

saw today in The Advocate that there is a West Atchafalaya Floodway. It has never been used. I have never heard of it. Could one of you amateur hydrologist explain why it has never been used? And what circumstances would have to exist to use it?

The west floodwaters starts in avoyelles parish. It consists of a west guide levee 30’ in height and runs past Krotz Springs. The “gate” is a shorter lever on the north that borders Bayou des Glaises. For the floodway to be used is tremendous backwater flooding from the red and Mississippi rivers into northeastern avoyelles parish. The water would then spill over the levee and flood. It will take a tremendous amount of water to activate the floodway. IMO, old river control structure would fail before the west floodway is activated and simmesport is wiped off the map.

To really appreciate what is going on up at the ORCS study a satellite map of the area until you understand and know the topography of the area. Get in your vehicle and go ride up there when the Mississippi River is at Project flood stage. Drive over the spillway, look at the levee height at Red River Landing, drive over the Auxiliary structure, the Low Sill Structure,Go up to the big bend in the river by the Red River Wildlife Management Area. You will see that it is just not a matter of building a backup structure. The river wiill beat the ACOE one day.

I was really amazed by the elevation changes in that area. The Mississippi is basically sitting on top of the land at this point.

“The fuse levee”

They were concerned about using it in 2011, but your right. Seems like it would take an unimaginable amount of water to have to use it.

Was at my grandpa’s old camp down Old River over the weekend. Im 33 and never seen the water this high. Really hope this dry weather holds up because one more big rain (on top of whats flowing in from the north) will cause some shite to occur. Everything out by Catahoula is real high too. Water damn near touching LA28.

I wish it were closer. Judging from the videos I've seen of when it's opened, the ground has to shake when that water starts flowing.

Know a guy that’s gonna lose his arse off in cane. Said last time he sat on the levee waiting on the water. Sounded like a train with no engine coming through the woods

1.12 million gallons of water every second. And that's just them going easy. Could only imagine if they opened all the gates and let it roar
