Sam the Ram was for real. He now resides at BHS - stuffed and mounted.

Was it? I remember him at games. Seemed like it had not been that long. I remember Neville fans sticking Shasta cans on sticks with Tiger tails on the back of the can.

Yeah Shasta was a real tiger and occasionally was brought to football games and pep rallies... the funny thing was that the school and city of Monroe saw no problem with Neville students going to the the zoo picking up the tiger with cage and driving him through the town in a students truck...not much liability there lol...I know this cause I was one one the transporters... 17-18 year old kids driving around pulling a full grown tiger

In the spirit of good form, I just asked a friend of mine who graduated from Neville in 2000, he said he remembers a Tiger being trucked around the track on the football field during games when he was younger. I stand corrected

Same for the Lion from the zoo for Ouachita games and pep rallies. We laughed at a recent class reunion about how times have changed since a couple of 17 year old kids could drive up to the zoo pulling a trailer with a cage on it, load up the lion, and drive to the game.

But, we all considered the lion our mascot, just like Neville considered the tiger its mascot.

Hardest mascot to put in a cage was that stupid warrior for St. Fredericks.

Of course they did. He died and they had him stuffed. He is on display inside the trophy case.

I do know for a fact that there was a lady in New Llano that kept a live tiger at her house. She was required by the town to have a 10' to 15' fence around her back yard. She did eventually move.

I don't believe the tiger that was seen at Fort Polk running loose was that tiger. The time between the two was too long. The tiger around Fort Polk was said to have been caught by a group out of Texas. The agreement was, if they caught him they could put him in their zoo.
