In relation to all the other waste of christmas, $30 for a book and an elf that will last for years and give a kid a hundred or so mornings of fun in his childhood is one of the better ways to spend money. It's also one of the better uses of social media, sharing something simple and fun that anyone can do. Far better than people bragging on social media about this or that, or sharing their stupid political views, fighting and arguing, or posting photos of themselves feeling cute or whatever tf.

I will not do it though, I trained my kid early on that these elves aren't real elves and she has been crushing other parents' hearts that want their kids to do this. I love it, I have gotten so much hate from other parents about ruining this for them. My wife gets kinda aggravated about it, but she really didn't want to do the thing, so she tolerates my destruction of this for other parents.
