Study

quote:

UC San Diego claims in a new study that certain people who regularly consume moderate to heavy amounts of alcohol are more likely to live to 85 without developing dementia and other cognitive problems compared to people who don’t drink at all. The long-term study was largely based on white, middle-class men and women living in Rancho Bernardo, a master-planned community in North County.

Maybe there's something in their water.

It's because they're always drunk and nobody can tell the difference.

Rancho Bernardo Wikipedia page talks more about softball than anything else.

Tis all I need to know.

If you're a heavy drinker and last to 85, you're a genetic outlier. All the weaker members of the herd have been culled by accidents and liver disease.

This can be said for practically any disease with known causes.

For real. I'm sure a plurality had the same lucky number, too.

Jesus Christ, researchers.

Is this the place that 60 minutes did a study on?

It was really interesting. I'll look for link.

Here ya go. Different place, but similar results.

Lesley Stahl: What about alcohol? Claudia Kawas: Oh. Alcohol made a difference. But it may not be what you think... Claudia Kawas: Moderate alcohol was associated with living longer than individuals who did not consume alcohol.
Lesley Stahl: Wait a minute. Ha-- moderate-- alcohol you live longer?
Claudia Kawas: Yes. Up to two drinks a day led to a 10-15 percent reduced risk of death compared to non-drinkers.

Jane Whistler: Isn't that exciting? And any kind of alcohol seemed to do the trick. Claudia Kawas: A lot of people like to say it's only red wine. In our hands it didn't seem to matter.
Lesley Stahl: Martinis just as good.

Claudia Kawas: Yeah.

There's a lot of doctors that tell me That I'd better start to slowin' it down
But there's more old drunks
Than there are old doctors
So I guess we'd better have another round
