That's pretty cool. Before my dad got sick he was always building things and one of his projects was one we did together with model trains. He built this table that had the turf down with the tracks set. The table was able to be folded lateral and put away. It was just the beginning of something bigger. But right after he put together all of the electrical work on it, he started to get sick and was never able to finish it.

One of my friends used to really like it so he gave it to my friend's dad so they could work on it together, but they ended up not doing much with it.

I have my Lionel North Pole Central set up in the basement right now. I added an outer loop to the track layout this year plus some buildings to Christmas Village. My cat comes through and trashes the village about twice a day.

I’m at the point where I’m just mocking up a lot of stuff on my old pool table before building the benchwork. It’s small, but you have to start somewhere.

And here it is at night

Thank you and sorry for the crummy photo :)

It’s running on a Digitrax DH152 DCC command station and power pack. I have five DCC engines at the moment (all converted). Three GP38-2’s, a GP50, and a SW9.

I’m not into switching, so my layout will have two main lines and a spur for a small logging operation. The plan is to do a big L-shaped pattern with the mainlines being dogbones. It have the small rural town on one end, run through the Black Hills in the middle, then meet up with the industrial sector on the far end.

I enjoyed it as a kid with my grandpa.

When I have kids and a bigger house, I intend to get back into it.

It's pretty fun.

I’ve always been obsessed with trains, but never got into model railroading until very recently. Man it’s expensive!

I have a couple of HO scale Bachmann starter sets with the UP 4-8-4 and a BNSF GP38-2, and an ATSF 3751 4-8-4 as well as a bunch of freight cars. Brought it all to my parents’ place in Memphis to set up around the tree. I can’t keep the damn steam engines on the rails, though that is due to changes in grade from one rug to another.

I sadly don’t have any room at my apartment for anything other than a basic layout.

There’s a decent shop off Summer Ave in Memphis that I checked out yesterday, and there are a couple in Atlanta that are worth visiting. I’ll have to check out the shop in Ponchatoula when I’m down in LA in 3 weeks.

I had an uncle who was really into it. When I would visit he would let me run the trains but I was careful not to touch any of the other shite. My grandfather had one in his garage, not as elaborate as my uncle's, and I could mess with the town buildings and shite and he wouldn't care. So I played soldiers (the green and gray guys) and have battles in the town and derail the train. After the weekend was over and we went home, he would set everything back up and let me destroy it again a couple of weekends later. That was some fun times.

They're both gone now and I don't know what happened with all of that train crap, but it will always give me good memories of both of them.

Photos and video are off the web now, but I did an insurance investigation in '17 for a guy who had an 8,000 sq ft section of his house dedicated to model trains. And it wasnt some basic addition. Probably cost 500k+ They showed his house/collection on a history channel show once.

He had over $300k in model trains basically stolen from him by an auction house up in the northeast.

I have surprisingly handled several model train investigations for insurance companies
