MIT’s new ultrasonic device extracts clean water from air 45 times faster

quote:

MIT engineers have developed a new, rapid method for extracting clean drinking water from sponge-like atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) materials.

Standard AWH systems rely on sorbents — materials that are excellent at absorbing moisture from the air but struggle to let it go. Typically, these systems use heat from the sun to evaporate the captured moisture, a passive process that can take a long time.

So this invention won't work in India.

This would work great in swamp arse LA but does it work in Phoenix?

Ultimately, this rapid cycling system could be a game-changer for communities in desert regions and areas where traditional water supplies and even saltwater desalination options are limited.

This is where this will fail, just like every other promised invention in this realm of climate-change nutjobbery. In arid regions, there isn't enough available moisture in the air to make any technology feasible. The energy inputs required are either too high or the net output of water is too low. Just like Fontus and many others, the basic laws of physics/thermodynamics don't give a shite.

Could work well on a desert island or on a boat.

Can we use it to find out what squirt is?

Still need water vapor in the air to work well. Most desert atmospheres contain very little water vapor. Where this could work well is along the Pacific coast and tropical areas where freshwater is scarce and water vapor concentrations in the local atmosphere is relatively high.

I don't think most desert islands are actually in a desert. Boats either.

Salt air has its own deleterious effects on electrical/mechanical systems as well as probably this absorbent media. It would certainly contaminate the resulting water too.

Anything around saltwater is going to need plenty of upkeep, but you may be able to use this device in conjunction with watermakers such as they use on ships to help a lot with water supply in places where it's needed.
