Tell them they have to leave, and then build another port that is probably closer to the open water, instead of traversing the river up to New Orleans.
Yea let's just completely abandon the largest port in the US (port of south LA)

side note: the post sandy work in the NE has tied up all the dredges and the Usace can't even get dredgers to respond to bid openings for channel maintenance in the MR. Basically, the U.S. dredge fleet is tiny and not technologically advanced enough to keep up with maintenance much less restoration, but there are a lot of yahoos out there who think we can dig and pump our way to a restored coast.
But, the Free Market, man.

The drinking water issue seems like an easy fix. Grab the water from further north on the river and pipe it down. My water comes from a lake 40 miles away in Texas.
If we can pump water from the Colorado River to Southern California, then we could pump water from Natchez to NOLA with ease. However, I highly highly highly doubt that the Old River Contol Structure will fail. It held up to the Flood of 2011 and they are strengthening it and all the levees to for stronger floods.
Congress needs to get off their arse and fund the Coast 2050 plan (it is not perfect, but it is a start). Hell they flat out wasted $125billion last year LINK and $100 billion the year before.

The Port of La would still be usable if the river changed course, the water would just be salty.

Very true. You'd basically need a massive desalinization plant. Which might be feasible if the New Orleans Sewer & Water Board isn't the one in charge.

You do realize that one of the reasons that the port of south la is so big is because it has to river to traverse. Panamax ships can unload anywhere from Chalmette to the old bridge in BR. That is a huge amoung of real estate that other ports (i.e port of long beach or mobile) can't compete with. That means that it is cheaper to have the ship sail up the river a few miles than sitting out at sea waiting to be unloaded.
