I'm an OEF vet. Heard of the vfw and that's about it. Was told it was just a bar for vets. Serious question. What does the vfw do and why should I join?

That meme is so true. Every time I tell someone I served oversees I always get the "you are a marine." Then I explain that I was in the Natty Guard. Some of The criticisms of the Guard are warranted, but some of us actually served our country.

I was in the Marines and switched to the guard. Now when I tell people I'm in the guard I have to say "But I was in the Corps for 15 years before I switched."

I'm coming in late to this thread and have no desire to read it all. Just saw the first reply about the national guard. Well played sir. However currently there are more national guardsmen deployed in Afghanistan than there are active duty. ;)
However. Nothing wrong with signing up to drink beer and barbecue.

From what I gather the whole drinking beer and BBQ, went by the wayside after 9/11. Both the Guard and the reserve had to change the way they did business due to the amount of deployments.
