The primary reason is reducing the moment of inertia so that the car is more nimble. Normally it is not great at producing a 50/50 weight distribution like some very well engineered FE cars achieve but the higher weight in the rear helps with traction during acceleration.
Think of reducing the moment of inertia like an ice skater going into one of those spins. When their arms are outstretched they spin slowly, when the pull their arms in (with no added energy) they spin much faster.

The current generation Vette is pretty close to 50/50. They mount the transmission over the rear transaxle.

If you're not an old bald guy or a woman, you have no business driving a corvette. However this one looks like they might be doing something right.

Since the second generation Corvettes have been FMR layouts, front mid engine rear drive. It is easier to get 50/50 than rear mid engine. There have been a few FMR layouts like the Viper, S2000, 350/370Z, Skyline, RX7/8 and a host of 12 cylinder Ferraris.
The mid-engine Corvette will only see a small increase in performance for just that change, the rest will be from other enhancements and the price will reflect it, probably 150k. They will almost certainly keep the front engine cars as well for the volume, will be interesting they name the lines, the ME may be a Zora.
Edit: fixed spelling of Zora, I had tried to change a Corvette into an Italian supercar...

More about target audience. The older guys, for the most part, liked certain parts of he classic look. They have started having more of a European influence as they began shifting more attention to the younger guys buying them now.

I would agree with you on later C3's and some C4's. But what are you driving that is better than the C7's?

Yep... I talked to a Corvette Racing engineer last weekend at Road Atlanta and he said the C7 will be around for a while longer.

In the last couple of years, I noticed a shift in ownership. A lot of older guys are getting rid of their older vette's because they simply don't want or can't work on them anymore.
Younger guys who are looking to get into a vette and can't afford a new one are seeing this as an viable alternative. The old guys are taking the money from the sale and buying new and can still enjoy the ride.

I think that's a big part in why you're seeing changes like this.

Under wraps most any mid-engine sports car will.

Are you referencing the failures or the LT1 in general?

A great car that a ZL-1 can whip on the track.
Let's see, $200k vs $65k........I'm liking Chevy's odds.
