The inside, or shall we say, the management of Sears compared to Walmart is worlds and worlds apart.
Kmart would be a good example as well. When business' were folding back in the 90's, such as Kmart and Sears, Walmart continued its growth. Why? Because of the upper management of each.
Walmart has been innovative and done things that were unimaginable in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Just as now, the times have changed to cater towards online shopping. So what has Walmart started to do? Put test locations in NWA for an online shopping service that you can go and pick up at a store 24 hours later. There is a test store currently in Bentonville that is ONLY for online shopping pick up.
Walmart is like McDonalds. Neither are going anywhere. No matter what company tries to get the upper hand, the big brother will always come out on top.

It's only unprecedented because it's coming off of unprecedented gains man.
Walmart is still taking in money hand over fist.

McDonalds has an enormous share of the fast food and fast casual market, they might decline a little but they're in no danger.
McDonalds Revenue for 2014 was around $33 Billion. 2nd and 3rd place was $12 Billion each. 4th was $9B, 6th was $7.5 Billion combined between 2 large chains under the same corporate umbrella.
