Thinking about going the custom USB/digital route for a catalog of our merchandise. That way, when I go visit possible dealers/brand ambassadors, I can hand them a small USB that features our products vs. a hard copy catalog they have to flip through. Maybe make a digital order invoice on there as well. Figure if I just do a presentation where they can scroll through on their computer, it would be easier. Pros? Cons? Only thing negative I can think of is if we meet somewhere without a computer, which I can have mine with me in case this happens. Thoughts?

Was looking online to order. Nothing tech related, but more of sports and recreation. 50 custom logo USB devices run around $180. An order of 25 ten page catalogs run around $460. Trying to save some money, but have to spend it to make it.

I am a operations manager and do a good bit of purchasing. I would say know your buyer. The young guys that work under me that are fresh out of college and like to play Nintendo, would love that. Me, I am most impressed when people take thought and time and bring me a sample they put together or a customer printout with info specific to me. Shows the hustle.
I met with a CEO a few months back of a distribution company and he came to the sales meeting with a pen and a pad. It's old school and he had 20 people that could have been taking notes, but I left thinking he cared more. That's what most buyer want. To buy from someone who cares. So, do what the demographic you are dealing with would see as important and as you taking extra time.

I usually meet with small business owners/retailers. Never more than one or two people in a meeting. I deal with water sports, and right now is the time to get all the orders in for next season. Trying to think outside the box, but dont want to spend a ton of my marketing money this early in the game. If I get catalogs made, that will cut about 40% of my marketing budget before 2018. Trying to pump more money into product, but it does me no good if I cant promote it properly.

You want to be able to direct the conversation. If you are
facing the customer and talking, he/she may be 5 items past what you are promoting. If possible, sit beside rather than across, that will enable you to point to certain features/benefits.

Remember the customer might be on tigerdroppings. for all you know.

Sounds like a good idea if you can control the situation.

My approach would be 2 fold.....present directly to them thru a catalog setup and leave them with the USB device.

That way if questions come up after you leave, he has the tools to be looking at something that you could guide him thru over the phone, or he could share with his suoeriors.

Yeah, I think it depends on who your target audience is. If they are older and no so tech savvy, they'd probably prefer print materials. If they are a little more tech savvy, then I think a USB would be okay.

I really like Saints idea. Maybe get some small print materials tat hits the highlights and then give USBs that go into more details?

I prefer the printed materials. My #1 supplier always emails me new products etc, with links, I delete most of them. Whenever he sends me a hard copy catalog or brochure, I at least give it a minute or two of perusal, and it has actually resulted in some orders.

I would never plug someone's thumb drive into my computer. It's all about cyber security.

We're not allowed to use 3rd party USB, so it wouldn't work with us (and I'm assuming a lot of Fortune 500 types are going the same route on cyber security).

Light printed material with your major categories referencing an on-line catalogue with the more granular detail would work best for dealing with us.

I'd advise against going completely electronic, too easy to get lost in between all the other 1000's of spam and solicitor messages circling around us on any given day.

Solid advice terd. I thought you used your left hand anyway.

Yeah, to go along with what Saint said, thats my plan. Have one catalog to present, with the leave behind thumb drive. Im having 25 made with our logo on them as a trail deal. Thanks for the input.
