His only defense was probably self-defense, and for that to work there's got to be a reason the shooter felt threatened. Don't know the facts here, but this was probably the best defense available. Lawyers don't choose to put forth bad defenses if they can help it.

The guy deserves it. He started the altercation and escalated it and fired a shot through Zimmerman's closed window

No, he's not trying too hard. Everything he said was spot on. Zimmerman was attacked by a thug and defended himself successfully. This guy tried to murder Zimmerman.
