This has to be the worst luck of all time. Legit question... What are the odds of this happening? Has to be astronomical.

You don't frick around with rabies. When the rabid bat attacked and bit me, I was told to take the four rabies shots (no more stomach shots) even if the bat was negative.

With one exception, recent U.S. rabies death have all been "bats found in the house." If you are asleep and wake up with a bat in the room, you should assume that you were bitten.

Why did you need the lungs, other than to breathe?

So the short story is that I had a stem cell transplant for relapsed leukemia in 2015. I developed a common side effect of the stem cell transplant where my new immune system attacks my body. It affected multiple organs but only the eyes and the lungs long term. For 8 years, my lung function was less than 50% of what it should be for my age and got to an all time low of the upper teens just before my lung transplant.

The donor in this case, an Idaho man, had been found unresponsive after a presumed cardiac arrest in early December 2024, around five weeks after being scratched by a skunk in late October.

Presumed? You’d think they’d find out the cause of death before doling out his organs.

Interesting. My mom just died in March of interstitial lung disease. She needed a transplant.

I would take any kidney if it gave a break from Dialysis but I would hope it wouldn't make things worse. This is worst case scenario for sure. I read about Hiv and Hep concerns but those are treatable.
I'm hoping to win the lottery that way I'll just fly to Korea and buy a transplantv straight up.
Getting on the list is such a pain in the arse. So many hoops to jump through.
