GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD/CNN) - The estranged husband of a Michigan murder victim was charged with her killing Thursday. Michael Pagel was arraigned on charges for the planned killing of his wife, Renee Pagel, who is also the mother of his three now-adult children. Renee Pagel's longtime close friend, Chris Crandle, said the couple was near the end of a difficult divorce. “She said to me a few months before she was killed, ‘Do you think he would kill my kids?’ Now who asks that?” Crandle said. According to the Kent County Sheriff's Office, Renee Pagel was 41 years old when she was stabbed to death in her Rockford-area home in Aug. 2006. She was home recovering after donating a kidney to a parent of one of her students at the Kent County Intermediate School District. Search warrants revealed that responding officers found her covered in blood.

They discovered defensive wounds on her body and blood spattered on the headboard, walls and window. Michael Pagel was a person of interest from the beginning, but authorities struggled to find evidence linking him to the crime. The case grew cold until two years ago when it was reexamined. Michael Pagel now faces a count of first-degree premeditated murder.

He has been charged with "planning to kill her" . Not exactly sure what that means, legally.
I wonder what relationship the kids and him have had over these past 13 years. And why did it take 13 years? Husbands, especially when filing divorce, are always the #1 suspect. He must have had a pretty solid alibi, or at least a very believable one.

Attempt. If he took substantial steps toward actually committing murder, he can be found guilty of attempt to murder.

This shite is always crazy to me.

Watched a really old Forensic Files episode where a guy was arrested 20 years later after killing his mother.

He got married, had kids, normal job then boom this comes back up.

How do you just live with that for 20 years? And then how fricking crazy must it be for the people around you when it comes out

I actually knew this guy. Heard the story of his wife "abandoning him and the kids." Also heard about the fire that killed his children.

He set the fire that killed his kids. No one knew it at the time.

I heard more than one express the opinion about his wife, "Gene probably killed her."

It is really crazy, just had a guy I worked with, made good money as a union guy, get caught after 28 years for double murder and robbery for the feds. Not one minute did any of us ever think "Yup, that guys could murder someone, let alone 2 people."

I couldn't do it, but I am not a murderer either, so theres that.
