The better question is why should eye health professionals be coercing people to get their eyes checked when no other health professionals do that? Why are EHP so much more interventionist than professionals in other specialties?

Eyesight changes over time, and things you wouldn't think about too much (wearing your contacts for longer than you should, seeing little weird things or blurriness) could cause eye damage - maybe permanently. Going blind is a pretty big deal.

Why do pain management clinics coerce you into seeing a doctor when you just want a handful of Oxycontin?

No one forces you to go to the optometrist. You can not go, and not get new contacts.

You can't just go down to the drugstore and pick up some Oxycontin; if you want it, you need a scrip. Likewise you can't just pick up some contacts. If you want them, you need a scrip.

Obviously, there are ways around both of those sets of restrictions, but the bases for them are similar. What you want can hurt you, no matter how sure you are it won't, and somewhere along the way society decided that some things that can hurt you will be restricted.

Contacts are not nearly as addictive as oxycontin

So you are against having an eye exam every year?

Dam right. I go every two years. As long as my glasses are good and I can see okay, I'm good to go.

Once I needed a new pair and was told I had to go in. I told them I'd go pick up my information from last visit and be going elsewhere. They took care of me. I don't need them to tell me when I need to see an eye doctor.

I'm just a lil near sighted so contacts/glasses aren't mandatory for me to see like some ..they just make my vision better).
I asuume you know that means you can see close. I only question since you say, "lil". If you're a "lil near-sighted" that means you don't see much, "near."

I'm near-sighted too so I don't need them to read. In fact I was told if I had lasik I would be able to see farther but it would mess up my ability to read without glasses/contacts.

Are you seriously comparing contact lenses to narcotic drugs?

I have slept in my contacts regularly for 10+ years with no issues/infections, no changes to my prescription, and no changes to the shape of my eye. Since the J&J lawsuit many years ago, I also use lenses much longer than directed, also with no issues.

That is fricked up scary!!!!!!

You are fricking up your eyes and you don't even realize it. Run, don't walk, to get an eye exam and tell them this.

Just meant that I'm near sighted(yes this means I can only see close). However my near sightedness is very minor. I can watch tv, go to movies, drive, etc without glasses/contacts and still see pretty well(including road signs,etc)...it's just I can see those signs, etc more clearly with glasses/contacts on. Just mainly wanted to portray that I'm not someone that is practically blind without glasses/contacts.

I just ordered a pair of rx glasses and learned they didnt need the rx. They said just check that you entered the rx numbers correctly. No verifying from the doctor.

I had mine done by Dr. Afeman in 2003? (Same place as Dr. Woo.) Just went back to him for an eye exam because I have a floater.

He said my corneas look good from when he did the surgery and I still see 20/20 in one eye and the other will need a tweak surgery at some point.

The better doctors seem to run around $1200 per eye. You could go cheaper like with Dr. Singer, who is $799 per eye...but eye surgery is not exactly something you want to bargain shop for.
