Riddle? It’s a story.

So sappers were soldiers who would dig tunnels under these massive, Ancient stone walls

So the sappers would dig these tunnels, and place crude mines (this was the early gunpowder era, so you had Janissaries and early cannons and such.) beneath the walls to bring them down.



So the Viennese had counter sappers that would dig their own tunnels, to try to cut off the tunnels of the advancing ottoman sappers. And when two tunnels met they would battle in the dark.

The whole story is a fascinating one.
The besieged city was on the verge of surrender
They had almost run out of food,

First they ate the cows,
Then the pigs and the sheep,
Then the horses, then the cats,
Then the rats within the keep.

Well, dammit, now you have me thinking about the siege and so I’m writing about it. Might do a thread tomorrow on the ordeal. It’s fascinating
