Yes. It's not fun, but at the same time you can end up landing into a better situation than you were in before getting laid off.

Long story short, the project I had been working on for about a year was coming to an end. This was in November, December 2008, when the economy was going to shite. Other big projects were coming to an end so a lot of people were only able to get 20-25 hrs a week. People started to assume layoffs were coming, but management assured everyone that it was temporary and that by the beginning of the year there are several big projects that would be starting and that they might have to start actually hiring more people.

About two weeks later they started laying people off. They were telling people it was temporary and that they will be hiring everyone when the projects started. I thought I would be laid off because after finishing the project I was on, I had no work. When the new year started, I was still there, but I went ask my manager about my future. I was told I would be reassigned to a new position that involved working on something related to keeping up with all projects and he told me as long as the company had work (which they would always have some type of work) I would have a job.

That was great news especially at that time. For about 2 months I would go into work with absolutely nothing to do, I couldn't wait to start working in my new position. One day the manager asked if I would go to his office. Finally, I thought I would be getting started in my new position. As I turned the corner, I saw someone from HR in his office. Right away, I knew what was about to happen. When I got in there he started giving me the whole spiel "you have been a great employee for us, but.....". I interrupted as to say "cut the shite" and I asked him "So I am being laid off right? What do yall need me to do". HR handed me some paperwork and the manager started back up with "we hated to do this", but I just rolled out of his office.

I wasn't pissed about being laid off, I thought it was going to happen a few months earlier. I was pissed that the mother fricker told me I was going to be reassigned and that I didn't have to worry about my job, blah blah blah.

I'll open up my own. Will welcome everyone. It will be like Studio 54. I will then be able to expand, have a chain of them all over the county and while you have just enough regulars to barely keep you open I will be laughing while balling out of control..
